Juan de la Cruz Cano y Olmedilla was a Spanish engraver and unknown cartographer. Scholarship holder in Paris between 1752 and 1760 along with the illustrious cartographer Tomás López, with whom he published several well valued and important cartography works, but their relationship rapidly deteriorated as public recognition favored Tomas López and condemned Juan de la Cruz. Nevertheless he was named Academic of Merit of the Royal Academy of San Fernando and Geographer of the King in 1771.

Although working in numerous etching projects he continued to devote much of its time to geography, where his culminating work was the Map of South America, herculean accomplishment and expensive work that left the engraver to the brink of ruin, but whose magnificent composition and fidelity, upon completion in 1775, earned him numerous praises.

Wanted the misfortune that his greatest work was banned by the crown because of political reasons, and the work which had occupied him the last ten years, remain unpaid. He died in poverty in 1790.
