Collection of eighty copper plates engraved between 1797 and 1799. Historically, the Caprichos series appeared at a time of change of mentality and upheaval, a decisive stage in Goya's life and artistic production. The series is set in the context of a time when both the Ancien Régime and the image of Charles IV and his prime minister, Manuel Godoy, were being shattered. The arrival of Enlightenment thought introduced a new, more liberal conception of life, which led Goya to criticise Spanish society in the most satirical way possible through various themes, such as the abuses of the highest social classes, personified in the nobility and the Church, marriages of convenience, bad education linked to ignorance and false beliefs such as witchcraft.
