Antonio José Cavanilles was an outstanding Spanish scientist, botanist and naturalist of the 18th century. Educated in Valencia, while working in Paris he embraced the Enlightenment and Science, introduced the works of Karl Linnaeus to Spain, and thanks to him, after the French Revolution, around seven hundred banned works of great scientific, political and philosophical importance entered the country.

Throughout his life he carried out important work in fields as diverse as botany, agronomy, geology, hydrology, medicine, geography, cartography, industrial science and even archaeology. But he really excelled in botany, where he carried out important work describing and cataloguing the new plants discovered by the expeditions to the Americas that arrived at the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, researched the South American flora ("Glosario de botánica en cuatro lenguas") or classified and inventoried the flora of the Iberian Peninsula ("Icones et descriptiones plantarum [...]", one of his most outstanding works).

In addition to his important phytological work, he founded the first Spanish publication devoted exclusively to the Natural Sciences ("Anales de Ciencias Naturales"), he was a precursor of modern theories on the efficient use of natural resources and sustainable development, and it is due to him that the Royal Botanical Garden was considered one of the most important in Europe, thanks to his work as Director of the centre.

A scientist of prolific literary production, tireless work and of great importance for Spanish and European science, thanks to him more than 2000 species were described, studied and made known to science. In his honour, several plant species are named after him.
