Esta colección de estampas, empresa de la Academia de San Fernando, publicó esta serie de grabados con dos fines principalmente, divulgar el conocimiento de las obras artísticas y fomentar el arte del grabado.

En total se grabaron cincuenta pinturas por mano de los mejores grabadores en este momento como, Bartolomé Maura, José María Galván o José Guillén, entre otros.

La realización de este proyecto tuvo un lento desarrollo en el tiempo, pues pasaron ocho años desde su inicio hasta la publicación del primer cuaderno en el año 1870.
