Juan José Martínez y Espinosa was an engraver and painter from Cadiz who began his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando under the tutelage of Juan de Ribera, and who years later would end up being a professor of theory and history in that house. He participated in numerous competitions and competitions of the Academy, for which he obtained several honorable mentions, such as that of 1858 and another in 1860. In addition to being a professor he would become president of the Círculo de Bellas Artes and a member of the Society of Etchings of Madrid.
