Mariano Fortuny y Marsal was a painter and engraver, considered one of the most important Spanish painters of the nineteenth century after Goya. He showed great artistic talent from an early age, in 1850 he moved to Barcelona and went to work in the workshop of the sculptor Domènec Talarn, who managed to enroll him in the School of Fine Arts of la Lonja, at the same time that he attended the school of the painter Claudio Lorenzale. Thanks to a pension from the Diputación de Barcelona, he moved to Rome in 1858 to further his studies, until in 1860 the Diputación proposed him to travel to Morocco as a graphic chronicler to cover the war that was taking place there. It was this trip that most influenced him in his artistic career, because the exoticism he finds, pushes him to be interested in Orientalism.

In his frequent trips to Madrid and the Prado, he met Federico Madrazo, then director of the Prado Museum and the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He also traveled through major European capitals and museums to later return to Rome and began painting one of his best-known paintings, The Battle of Tetouan, while attending classes at the French Academy of Fine Arts in the Italian capital. In 1862 he returned to Morocco for a few months and returned to Italy carrying out orientalist works. On the occasion of his wedding to the daughter of Federico Madrazo he painted The Vicariate, his most famous work, consolidating his fame in the exhibition at the Goupil gallery in 1870.

He lived for a time in Granada and Paris before returning to Rome, where he died.

On June 25, 1955 twenty-eight plates of Fortuny Marsal and fifty of Fortuny Madrazo were donated by Henriette Fortuny to the National Chalcography and on February 9, 1966 the heirs of the widow donated another seventeen plates of Fortuny Madrazo.
