Miguel Ángel Villarino is a Spanish painter and engraver from Zamora. He began studying engineering and philosophy, but abandoned them to devote himself to art, beginning to paint and engrave in a self-taught way, to enter the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas (School of Applied Arts). Villarino is considered a multidisciplinary artist who stands out as one of the greatest exponents of contemporary engraving. 

This work represents the vanitas, a type of still life in which the objects that appear symbolise the transience of life. Elements such as the skull are prototypical visual resources of the vanitas, alluding to the temporality and mortal condition of the human being. The presence of the plant in the print continues to suggest that perishable life, while the fragment of the flag expresses the insignificance of conventionalisms. 

Throughout his career he has had numerous exhibitions at national and international level, as well as receiving many awards in recognition of his work. His work is exhibited in museums such as the Museo de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid, among others.
