José Luis Cuevas was one of the most prominent Mexican artists of the mid-twentieth century. With a virtually self-taught career, he learned various techniques among which we highlight some as engraving, painting or sculpture. From very young he emphasizes his negative attitude to the more traditional art forms in Mexico such as muralism and nationalism. He will continue a trend toward the realism of the most marginal and dark aspects of society, as the example of prostitution, through grotesque forms and quite caricatured.

With only 20 years he would make his first exhibition in Washington in 1954, after which many more would come. Even in 1992 he inaugurated the José Luis Cuevas Museum in Mexico, which keeps its collection most of their work and even pieces from his private collection.

He has won several awards throughout his career of which we can mention some as the National Fine Arts Award by the Government of Mexico in 1981 or the First Prize International Print, I Triennale in New Delhi in 1968, including others.
