Tomás Francisco Prieto was an engraver and medalist. Disciple of the engraver Lorenzo Monteman, in 1747 he was appointed Principal Engraver of the Mint of Madrid, a character of vast intellectual training, he was accumulating thanks to his skill as an artist and his training, positions and recognitions throughout his life, as Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando or General Engraver of the Mints of Carlos III.

At the same time he was a teacher of important Spanish engravers such as Geronimo Antonio Gil. Tomás Francisco Prieto is one of the most interesting figures of the Spanish illustrated art scene, being proof of this that the Mint awards an annual prize with his name since 1990.
