This print of Architectural Monuments was engraved by Teófilo Ruffle, a Parisian artist who played a leading role in the creation of this fantastic series as an engraver. He trained as a lithographer with Juan José Martínez in the city of Madrid, where he was from a young age, also attending the Royal Academy of San Fernando as part of his training. He moved back to his native city where he perfected the art of lithography at the Municipal School of Drawing directed by Leon Painlevé. 

He returned to Madrid as an excellent artist in chromolithography, taking part in national exhibitions, obtaining an honourable mention and even participating in series as important at this historical moment as this collection of Monuments or some such as The Spanish Museum of Antiquities (1872 - 1880).

This engraving goes back in context to the year 808, when Alfonso II donated the Cross of the Angels to Oviedo Cathedral, which is currently the oldest surviving piece of goldsmith's work in Asturias. It is a Greek cross made from cherry wood laminated in gold. On the front, the cross has a gold filigree, while on the back there is a central medallion. It is complemented by a decoration based on polished semi-precious stones, such as agate, rock-crystal, etc., which are used to decorate the cross.
