The collection Fish of the Seas of Spain began in 1780 as part of a more ambitious project. By royal order, Antonio Sáñez Reguart, Commissioner of the Navy, was commissioned to study and subsequent publication of a work on Fish, marine insects, crustaceans, plants and seabirds of both seas that bathe the Peninsula, counting with the collaboration of Miguel Cros, who was in charge of drawing more than half a thousand species from nature.

Juan Bautista Bru de Ramón was commissioned to engrave the plates and illuminate the prints, receiving a pension of 36, 000 reales per year. Of the work, interrupted in 1790, only one hundred and thirty-six plates were engraved.

Juan Bautista Bru de Ramón has traditionally been considered the author of the Collection of Fish from the Seas of Spain prints, who after the draftsman disappearance signed the plates with his name, actually being the coordinator of the project. A recent investigation has concluded that the drawings were made by Miguel Cros, and the plates were engraved by Miguel Gamborino and Manuel Navarro.
