François Bellay was a French painter, printmaker and lithographer, a disciple of Pierre Révoil. Trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Lyon under Révoil, he received the institution's first prize for painting in 1810 and between 1817 and 1824 he exhibited in various salons in Paris and Lyon. Around 1830 he was hired by José de Madrazo to work at the Royal Lithographic Establishment, so he moved to Madrid. His relationship with the Spanish institution was brief, so his stay in the capital was in the same way, brief, but the engraved portraits of the family of Fernando VII are preserved from this period.
