Ricardo Baroja was a Spanish painter, writer and printmaker, considered by the latter as one of the successors of Francisco de Goya. He began his artistic studies with Eugenio Vivó, while he frequented the Malaga and Valencian artistic circles, where he met various painters and his works. He soon abandoned his career as a civil servant to dedicate himself fully to art, beginning by illustrating some books by his brother Pío Baroja and collaborating as an illustrator for several Madrid magazines.

A regular in the famous cafes of the capital along with very important characters of Spanish culture, he portrayed them in some of his works, such as in the engraving "Gentes del 98". Little by little Ricardo Baroja also became a member of the country's art galleries and contests, such as the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, which he attended on nine occasions and in which he obtained an award on two: the First Medal in 1908 and the Second in 1906. Together with Pablo Picasso and Francisco de Asís y Soler he founded the group "Arte Jóven", and in 1910 he co-founded the Society of Spanish Engravers, later renamed "Los 24".

His prolific artistic production was not interrupted even by the Spanish Civil War and continued until his death in 1953, leaving for posterity more than one hundred and thirty engravings, about a thousand oil paintings and two dozen books between essays and novels, in addition to the numerous articles that he published in magazines and newspapers throughout his life, although if there is one thing to highlight this versatile artist, it is because of his work as an engraver, which has enshrined him as the successor of the master Francisco de Goya.
