Jaume Plensa is a Spanish visual artist, sculptor, and engraver. He began his artistic training at the Llotja School of Art and Design and at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts. In 1980, he had the opportunity to hold his first exhibition in Barcelona, where he currently resides. Despite this, he has lived and worked in different capitals such as Berlin, England, Germany, the United States, and Brussels, being an artist with continuous training. He became a professor at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, has collaborated as a guest professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has given lectures at various museums and cultural institutions both nationally and internationally.
Plensa has received numerous national and international awards, including the Médaille de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, the National Fine Arts Award from the Generalitat of Catalonia, and the 2013 National Graphic Arts Award granted by the National Engraving Institute. A very significant part of Plensa's work is in the field of sculpture, exhibited in public spaces in different cities in Spain, France, Japan, England, and the United States, cities that have also seen his work through numerous exhibitions held there. Since 1996, he has collaborated on projects related to theater and opera, mainly working to develop new concepts and design spaces and costumes.
