Esteban Buxó was an artist of great importance thanks to his excellence in the art of engraving, despite the scant information we have about his life. He began his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in his native city, Barcelona, and was linked to the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. 

Throughout the 1860s, he took part in numerous exhibitions, as a result of which he won several medals and honourable mentions for his work.

In this etching Buxó depicts one of the most significant buildings in the city of Toledo, the Real Alcázar. It is the most visible building in the whole city and very characteristic when it comes to visualising the image of Toledo's skyline. Towards the middle of the 16th century, a process of transformation of the Alcázar began, giving it a sense of unity, with the royal character of the four massive towers at the corners and the ornamental details with the imperial coats of arms and heralds on the upper floor, among other things, being very representative.
