Simón Brieva was a Spanish artist from Zaragoza, the city where he would initially learn the principles of drawing. Later, in the city of Madrid, he began to study the art of intaglio engraving with Manuel Salvador Carmona. Thanks to this, he won the San Fernando Academy contest in 1781.

Brieva would participate in the most important publications at that time, given the situation of enlightened politics, with which the burin engraving technique would be notably promoted. Of these collections in which he participated we can highlight some that are currently in the funds of the National Calcography such as Journey to Constantinople or the Collection of portraits of illustrious Spaniards. We can also highlight that he was a fairly active engraver in terms of religious themes.
